United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) - Dover

IB Maths and Physics tuition for UWCSEA students

UWCSEA follows a continuous pathway towards the International Baccalaureate. In Grades 9 and 10 students study UWCSEA's own designed and assessed courses, which replaced IGCSE from 2025 and are built to prepare them for the demands of the Diploma. In Grades 11 and 12 they take the IB Diploma, where maths is studied as Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation and physics at Higher or Standard Level. Dover has offered the Diploma since 1977, and the college describes its IB Diploma cohort as one of the largest in the world: 642 students across both campuses in the Class of 2026. The pace and abstraction of IB maths and physics catch many students out, and one-to-one tutoring helps them keep up with a demanding programme.

How the sessions work

Sessions are online and one-to-one, led by Pietro Meloni, a PhD physicist with more than ten years of experience teaching students at international schools. We begin with an assessment session to see exactly where a student stands and which topics need attention. From there we work through the relevant material, IB past papers and exam technique, building the confidence to handle unfamiliar problems under time pressure. After each block of work parents receive a short progress note. Because Singapore runs several hours ahead of Europe, a student's after-school afternoon is a comfortable European morning for the tutor, so lessons slot naturally into the school week without late nights.

From the Grade 9/10 foundation to the IB Diploma

The step up from UWCSEA's Grade 9/10 courses to the IB Diploma is where many students feel the pressure. Diploma maths, whether Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, moves quickly and rewards genuine understanding rather than memorised methods. Higher Level physics adds a heavy conceptual load and expects fluent algebra and data analysis. The most common difficulties we see are gaps in core algebra, weak technique on longer structured questions, and the internal assessment. Tutoring targets these directly, going back to shore up foundations where needed and then rehearsing the exact style of question the IB sets, so that progress shows up in school assessments and mock exams.

If your child is at UWCSEA and finding IB maths or physics harder than expected, book a 20-minute assessment session. It is a chance to talk through where they are, what the Diploma expects, and how targeted one-to-one tutoring could help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which subjects and levels do you cover?+
Maths and physics across the pathway UWCSEA students follow: the foundational work of Grades 9 and 10, then IB Diploma Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation) and IB Physics at Higher or Standard Level. IGCSE Maths and Physics (Cambridge CIE or Edexcel) are also covered for students arriving from other schools.
Are lessons online, and does the time difference work?+
Lessons are online and one-to-one, which suits families in Singapore well. Singapore is several hours ahead of Europe, so a late-afternoon or early-evening slot after school in Singapore falls in the European morning for the tutor. That makes it easy to find a regular time without disrupting the school day.
Can you help with both the Grade 9/10 courses and the IB Diploma?+
Yes. For Grades 9 and 10 the focus is on securing the algebra, problem-solving and physics fundamentals that the IB later assumes. For the Diploma the focus shifts to the specific demands of Maths AA or AI and Physics HL or SL, including exam technique and the internal assessment. Support can start at either stage.
How do we get started?+
Get in touch and we arrange a 20-minute assessment session. We look at the student's current work, discuss goals and the UWCSEA pathway they are on, and agree a plan and a regular weekly time. There is no obligation to continue beyond that first conversation.
