Why past papers matter

Nothing prepares you for an IB exam like the IB exams that came before it. They are the closest thing to the real paper you will sit, written by the same people, marked with the same rules.

You learn the format before it can surprise you.

Structure, timing, the way questions are worded, the command terms. None of it should be new on exam day.

You see what examiners ask again and again.

The same ideas and the same traps come back session after session, dressed differently.

You train your timing.

Knowing the mathematics is not enough if the paper ends with two questions untouched.

The risk of practising them alone

Past papers without guidance can do as much harm as good. What I see every year in students who practise on their own:

  • You mark yourself against the final answer and miss that the method marks were never on the page.
  • You lose marks to three significant figures instead of an exact value, to a missing unit, to a graph without a scale, and never notice.
  • You do paper after paper and repeat the same mistake faster each time.

The marks are lost in places students do not look. You need someone to point at them.

That is why The Daily 7 exists

One email a day, Monday to Friday. Under two minutes to read, around ten to do the question. It takes the past papers you download and shows you, one question at a time, where the marks are won and lost.

  1. 1

    Today's question

One question from a real paper, with a precise reference such as "May 2023, AA HL, Paper 1, TZ1, Q6. Give it 8 minutes."

  2. 2

    Yesterday's answer

The one step that decided the marks, and the mistake most candidates made.

  3. 3

    What examiners saw

One line from the subject reports on that topic, with the year.

For parents there is a separate letter on Sundays: deadlines, what to ask your child, one number explained in plain words.
