IB Math or IB Maths? A Guide for US Families in Hong Kong

Yes. IB Math and IB Maths are the same course. "Math" is the American spelling and "Maths" is the British one, and the International Baccalaureate uses neither in its official titles: it calls the subject Mathematics. An American school in Hong Kong and a British one offer the same IB Diploma Mathematics, with the same syllabus and the same exams.

Why families get confused.

Families coming from an American curriculum are used to course names that change the content: Algebra II, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC. So when one school says "IB Math" and another says "IB Maths", it is natural to suspect two different courses. There is no difference. The IB Diploma Programme (the IB Diploma, a two-year programme taken in Grades 11 and 12, the last two years of high school) sets one set of papers worldwide, marked by the same examiners against the same mark scheme.

What actually differs.

The name that matters is not the spelling but the course code. Since first teaching in 2019, IB Diploma Mathematics has had two separate courses: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI). Each one exists at Higher Level (HL), the more demanding version with more teaching hours and an extra exam paper, and Standard Level (SL). That gives four options, and choosing among them is the decision this guide is about.

IB Maths Analysis and Approaches (AA) is the algebraic, proof-based course that leads naturally to calculus-heavy degrees. IB Maths Applications and Interpretation (AI) puts statistics, modelling and technology at the centre. Higher Level (HL) adds about 90 teaching hours and a third exam paper to either course; Standard Level (SL) is the lighter version.

How the exams are built.

Every IB Diploma subject is graded on a 1 to 7 scale, where 7 is the top grade. In IB Maths AA, Paper 1 is taken without a calculator and Paper 2 with a graphic display calculator (the GDC, a graphing calculator such as the TI-84 Plus CE or the TI-Nspire used in class). In IB Maths AI, both Paper 1 and Paper 2 allow the GDC. At HL only, Paper 3 is a one-hour problem-solving paper built around one or two longer investigations.

The internal assessment.

Both courses include the internal assessment (IA), a written mathematical exploration of 12 to 20 pages on a topic the student chooses. The school marks it and the IB moderates it, and it counts for 20% of the final grade at both HL and SL. It is marked on five criteria worth 20 marks in total, from presentation to the use of mathematics.

What your child would actually face.

A typical AA HL Paper 1 question asks for an exact answer by hand, for example to show that $\int_0^{\pi} \sin x \, dx = 2$ with no calculator. A typical AI question gives real data and asks the student to fit a model such as $y = ae^{kx}$ with the GDC and then judge whether the model is reasonable. Both are rigorous, but they reward different habits.

A student from an American curriculum should choose the IB Maths course that the target university degree requires, then check that their current level supports it. A Grade 10 student comfortable in Honors Algebra II or Precalculus can usually start IB Maths AA HL. One who finds algebra slow and effortful is often better placed in AA SL or AI.

How American courses map onto the IB.

There is no official equivalence table between US courses and IB Diploma Mathematics, so treat this as a teacher's reading, not a rule. The calculus in AA HL covers what AP Calculus BC covers and goes further, adding proof by induction, complex numbers and more demanding algebra. AA SL covers roughly the ground of AP Calculus AB.

The biggest adjustment for American students is not the content but the style: IB questions chain several steps together and give marks for method, not only for the final answer.

A decision in five steps.

Here is the process I use with families, applied to a Grade 10 student in Hong Kong who likes physics and is thinking about engineering.

• Step 1: list three or four target universities in the countries you are actually considering (the US, the UK, Hong Kong, Canada).
• Step 2: open each engineering admissions page and note the exact wording: "Mathematics AA HL", "Mathematics HL" or no requirement.
• Step 3: if even one strong option requires AA HL, AA HL becomes the default choice.
• Step 4: check readiness: ask the current maths teacher whether the student handles algebra (factorising, rearranging, exponentials) fluently and without a calculator.
• Step 5: if readiness is uncertain, plan targeted work over the summer before Grade 11 rather than dropping the level.

The outcome.

In this example the student starts AA HL with a clear reason, and the family knows exactly what to watch in the first term.

For engineering, physics, mathematics and computer science at selective UK universities, IB Maths AA HL is very often the stated requirement, usually with a minimum grade of 6 or 7. Many US universities do not set a fixed IB subject requirement, but they read the choice of AA HL as evidence that the student took the most rigorous maths available.

The United States.

American admissions offices judge the rigour of a transcript in the context of what the school offers. A student applying for engineering who could have taken AA HL and chose AI SL will usually look less prepared than one who took AA HL. Some US universities also award college credit for high HL scores, and the rules vary by institution, so check each one directly.

Hong Kong and the UK.

Universities in Hong Kong and the UK publish IB entry requirements subject by subject on their admissions pages, and for engineering and physical sciences these commonly name HL Mathematics. Some programmes accept AI HL for courses such as economics or psychology, and a few state explicitly that they do not accept AI for engineering. The only reliable source is the current page of each programme.

Predicted grades matter as much as the course.

A predicted grade is the grade the school expects the student to achieve in the final May exams, and it is what universities see at application time, usually in the autumn of Grade 12. A child is on track in IB Maths when school test grades are steady at the level the university plan needs, homework is finished without long evenings of frustration, and the student can explain a method aloud. A parent helps most by asking questions and keeping a routine, not by solving problems for the child.

How to help without doing the work.

You do not need to know the mathematics to be useful. These habits work in every family I have taught online:

• Ask your child to explain one solved question to you in two minutes: explaining exposes gaps faster than rereading.
• Ask to see marked tests, and look at where marks were lost, not only at the grade.
• Protect two or three fixed weekly slots for maths practice, including past paper questions under time.
• Ask the teacher, at the first parent meeting, what the current working grade is on the 1 to 7 scale and what would move it up by one.

Warning signs that call for extra support.

Act early if you see any of these in Grade 11: test grades falling two terms in a row, marks lost mostly on the no-calculator Paper 1, a student who "understood it in class" but cannot start a question alone, or anxiety that grows before every maths test. Moving from HL to SL is sometimes the right decision, but it is a university decision as much as a maths one. Before agreeing, check again whether your child's target degrees still accept SL, and ask the school for its deadline for level changes.
