IB Tuition in Singapore for Maths and Physics with a PhD Physicist

I am Pietro Meloni, a PhD physicist, and I give one-to-one online IB tuition in Mathematics and Physics to international-school students in Singapore. Lessons run on weekday evenings in Singapore time, which is my working morning in Europe. Tuition is from SGD 480 per month, and it starts with a 20-minute assessment session.

What does IB tuition with a specialist cover?

My IB tuition covers two subjects only: IB Mathematics, both Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI), and IB Physics, each at Higher and Standard Level. It includes the Internal Assessment in both subjects, HL Paper 3 in Maths, and exam technique on past papers marked against the IB markscheme.

Two subjects is a deliberate limit. A tuition centre with twenty subjects needs twenty tutors and a timetable. One person teaching Maths and Physics every day for more than ten years knows where each topic of the guide tends to break, which questions the IB repeats with a new surface, and which marks students give away without noticing.

Every student starts from a diagnosis, not from chapter one. In the assessment session I look at a recent test or mock paper and separate three things that look the same on a report card: a concept that was never understood, a method that is known but slow, and marks lost in how the answer is written. Each one needs different work.

  • IB Maths AA HL and SL, including HL Paper 3
  • IB Maths AI HL and SL, including calculator technique
  • IB Physics HL and SL on the current guide (first exams 2025)
  • Maths and Physics Internal Assessment: topic, structure, criteria
  • MYP and IGCSE Maths and Physics as the foundation for the Diploma

Can online IB tuition from Europe work in Singapore time?

Yes. Singapore is six hours ahead of Central Europe in summer and seven in winter, so a lesson at 6:30 pm in Singapore is late morning for me. I teach Singapore students on weekdays between 5 pm and 9 pm SGT, after school and before it gets late, at the same slot every week.

The time difference is the reason this works rather than the obstacle. A tutor in Singapore teaches after school, when they have already taught all day and every student wants the same three hours. For me those hours are the start of the working day, and they are reserved for Asia because European students are still at school.

Lessons happen on a video call with a shared whiteboard. The student writes on it too, so I see the working as it appears and not only the final answer. After every lesson a written report goes to the parents: what we covered, what went wrong, and what to practise before the next one.

How much does IB tuition cost in Singapore?

My IB tuition is sold by the month, not by the lesson. It starts from SGD 480 per month for one lesson a week; two lessons a week, the programme I recommend when a grade has to move by a fixed date, is SGD 960 a month. Each lesson is 50 minutes, one to one, and the price per lesson is the same at both intensities.

Exam months and a second subject cost more, and are agreed after the assessment session. There are no packages and no volume discounts. Nothing longer than the month is required, and the assessment session before the first lesson carries no charge and no commitment.

For scale: a repeated year at a top international school in Singapore costs from SGD 45,000 in fees alone.

Which international schools in Singapore teach the IB Diploma?

More than a dozen international schools in Singapore teach the IB Diploma, including UWCSEA, Tanglin Trust School, Dulwich College, the Canadian International School, the Australian International School, SJI International, GESS and Nexus. The schools differ in what comes before the Diploma: IGCSE, the MYP, or the school’s own Grade 9 and 10 courses.

Results are strong across the island. In the May 2026 session Singapore candidates averaged 35.67 points against a world average of 30.88, according to figures compiled by WhichSchoolAdvisor, and several schools published cohort averages of 37 to 39. SJI International and the Australian International School sit the November session instead, so their final exam preparation peaks between September and November.

That route matters for tuition. A student arriving in DP1 from IGCSE usually has solid algebra and little experience of writing mathematics in sentences, which is what the IA and Paper 3 reward. A student arriving from the MYP is often the opposite. The pages below look at each school’s route and what it means for Maths and Physics.

When should IB tuition start for the May 2027 exams?

For students sitting the May 2027 session, now in the second year of the Diploma, the useful moment to start is before the mock exams, not after them. The deadlines that arrive first are internal: the Maths and Physics IA drafts, set by each school months before the written papers.

For students in the first year of the Diploma, the first term is when the gap between the previous course and DP pace shows up. It is also the cheapest moment to close it, because nothing has been built on top of the gap yet. For students choosing between Maths AA and AI, or HL and SL, the decision is easier to make well before the school’s option deadline than to reverse afterwards.

How I work with families

Confidentiality
No student name, school or result is published without written consent. The reviews on this site carry a name only because the parent chose to sign it. A non-disclosure agreement is available on request before the first lesson.
Lessons in Singapore time
Weekdays between 5 pm and 9 pm Singapore time, at the same slot every week. Singapore does not change its clocks, so the lesson stays at the same local time all year.
A report after every lesson
Each lesson is written up the same day in a private family area: ratings for focus, understanding and execution, my note on how the hour went, the whiteboard we wrote, and the PDFs to revise from. Parents have their own access. See the family area.
One tutor, start to finish
This is not an agency. The person you meet in the assessment session is the person who teaches every lesson, marks every paper and answers every message, for as long as we work together.
Background-checked, under a code of practice
I am a member of The Tutors’ Association, the UK professional body for tutoring. Membership requires a criminal record check and two references, and commits me to its Code of Practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is your IB tuition one-to-one or in groups?

+
All tuition is one-to-one. There are no group classes. The whole lesson follows one student’s paper, one student’s gaps and one student’s pace, which is what a group class of six cannot do.

Do you come to our home, or have a tuition centre in Singapore?

+
No. Lessons are online only, on a video call with a shared whiteboard. There is no centre and no travel time, which is what makes a weekday evening slot possible for a student who finishes school at four.

How does the assessment session work?

+
The assessment session is a 20-minute video call with the student and, if possible, a parent. We look at a recent test or mock paper, identify where the marks are going, and agree whether tuition makes sense. It carries no charge and no commitment.

Do you teach subjects other than Maths and Physics?

+
No. I teach IB Mathematics and IB Physics only, plus the MYP and IGCSE courses that lead into them. For Chemistry, Economics or languages a specialist in that subject will serve your child better.
