IB Maths AA vs AI: Which One for University?

IB Maths AA or AI, HL or SL? A physicist and IB tutor explains which course each degree needs, and what parents should do next.

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI?

IB Maths Analysis and Approaches (AA) is the more algebraic, proof-based course, built around calculus and exact methods. IB Maths Applications and Interpretation (AI) is built around modelling, statistics and constant use of the graphic display calculator (GDC). Both courses exist at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL), and both are graded on the IB 1 to 7 scale.

The words parents need first.

HL is the deeper version of a subject, with about 240 recommended teaching hours; SL has about 150. Every IB subject is graded from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), and the full Diploma totals 45 points: six subjects worth up to 7 each, plus up to 3 bonus points from the core (Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay).

Same topics, different spirit.

AA and AI share the same five syllabus areas: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. What changes is the emphasis. AA asks the student to manipulate expressions by hand and justify each step; AI asks them to build a model, run it on the calculator and interpret the result.

Two short questions show the difference. A typical AA Paper 1 question, with no calculator, asks the student to differentiate y=x2sinxy = x^2 \sin x and obtain dydx=2xsinx+x2cosx\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x\sin x + x^2\cos x by the product rule. A typical AI question gives a population model P(t)=500e0.2tP(t) = 500e^{0.2t} and asks when it passes 2000; the student uses the GDC to find t6.93t \approx 6.93 years and then comments on whether the model is realistic. Both are real mathematics, but they train different habits.

How each course is examined.

AA HL has three written papers: Paper 1 (2 hours, no calculator), Paper 2 (2 hours, calculator allowed) and Paper 3 (1 hour, calculator, one or two long problem-solving questions). AI HL has the same three-paper structure, but the calculator is allowed on every paper. At SL, both courses have Paper 1 and Paper 2 of 1 hour 30 minutes each, and in AA SL Paper 1 is again calculator-free.

In all four versions, the internal assessment (IA), a written maths investigation of 12 to 20 pages called the exploration, counts for 20% of the final grade and is marked by the teacher, then moderated by the IB.

Which IB Maths course does my child need for university?

Your child needs IB Maths AA HL if they are likely to study mathematics, physics or engineering, and often for computer science and economics at selective universities. AI HL or AA SL is usually enough for business, psychology, biology and most social sciences. Either course at SL normally suits law, history, languages and the arts.

Start from the degree, not from the course.

The question a parent should ask is not "which maths is better?" but "which maths does the degree my child might choose expect?". UK universities are the most explicit: their course pages often name the IB course, the level and the grade, for example "6 in Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at HL". European and Asian universities vary more, and US universities rarely name AA or AI; they look at the overall rigour of the programme instead.

The table below shows the typical pattern, which is a starting point: the course page of each university is the only source that counts.

When your child is undecided.

A child who genuinely does not know what to study yet, but enjoys algebra and copes well without a calculator, is usually best served by AA HL, because it keeps every STEM door open. The honest caveat is that a strong grade in AI HL or AA SL is worth more than a weak grade in AA HL for any degree that does not require AA HL.

Universities admit on predicted grades (the grades teachers forecast for the final exams, sent with the application), so a course in which your child is predicted 4 can weaken an application that a predicted 6 elsewhere would have supported. Medicine is a special case.

Most medical schools care far more about HL Chemistry, and often HL Biology, than about the maths course. Many accept any maths at SL, but a few ask for a minimum maths grade, so check each target school individually.

Does my child need IB Maths AA HL for engineering, physics or computer science?

Yes, in most cases. For engineering, physics and mathematics degrees, selective universities typically ask for IB Maths AA HL, and many name it explicitly. A few accept AI HL for some engineering or computer science courses, but AA HL is the choice that keeps every STEM option open, in the UK, in Europe and elsewhere.

Why universities insist on it.

First-year engineering and physics courses assume that students can differentiate, integrate and manipulate algebra quickly and without a calculator. IB Maths AA HL is the course that trains exactly this. Beyond AA SL, the HL syllabus adds proof by induction, complex numbers, further integration techniques, differential equations, Maclaurin series and vectors in three dimensions. A typical AA HL task is to prove by induction that r=1nr2=n(n+1)(2n+1)6\sum_{r=1}^{n} r^2 = \frac{n(n+1)(2n+1)}{6} for every positive integer nn: a structured argument, not a calculator exercise.

What this means in practice for your child.

AA HL Paper 1 is two hours with no calculator, so a student who relies on the GDC for every step will feel the gap quickly. If your child is heading for physics or engineering and finds this uncomfortable in the first months, that is useful information early, not a verdict. The link with IB Physics.

IB Physics does not formally require a particular maths course, but physics HL papers ask students to rearrange equations such as v2=u2+2asv^2 = u^2 + 2as, work with vectors, and read gradients from graphs. A student taking Physics HL alongside AI SL can do well, yet usually has to practise algebra more deliberately. For a physics or engineering degree, the natural combination is Physics HL with Maths AA HL.

Computer science and economics.

Here the picture is more mixed. The most selective computer science and economics programmes often ask for AA HL; others accept AI HL or AA SL. This is exactly the case where reading five course pages before choosing saves a difficult switch later.

Search each university's course page for the exact phrase "Analysis and Approaches": if it appears next to "HL", the requirement is settled.

If a page only says "HL Mathematics", email the admissions office and ask whether AI HL is accepted; the answer is usually quick and definitive.

Can my child switch between IB Maths AA and AI, or HL and SL, and when?

Usually yes, but timing matters. Most schools allow a switch between IB Maths AA and AI, or between HL and SL, during the first term of the Diploma Programme, while the content still overlaps. Moving down from HL to SL is often possible later; moving up, from SL to HL or from AI to AA, gets harder every month.

Why the calendar is tight.

The Diploma Programme lasts two years, often called DP1 and DP2. Teachers set predicted grades early in DP2, and applications to Oxford, Cambridge and most UK medicine courses close on 15 October of that year. A switch after predicted grades are written is possible, but it can leave the application describing a course your child no longer takes. Each school sets its own deadline for changes, so ask for it in writing at the start of DP1.

A step-by-step decision in five moves.

This is the process I suggest to families, and it takes about two evenings:

  • Step 1. Sit down with your child and list three degrees they might realistically choose, even if they are unsure.
  • Step 2. Open the course pages of three to five universities for each degree and copy the exact maths requirement, word for word.
  • Step 3. Ask the maths teacher three questions: at what level on the 1 to 7 scale is my child working now, what predicted grade is realistic, and what is the school's deadline for changing course?
  • Step 4. Compare. If a target degree requires AA HL and your child is working at 5 or above, stay. If your child is working at 3 in AA HL and no target degree requires it, discuss AI HL or AA SL openly.
  • Step 5. Decide before the school deadline, and confirm the decision by email so everyone has the same record.

A worked example.

Imagine a DP1 student taking AA HL, currently working at 4, who wants to study psychology. The five course pages ask for "Mathematics at SL, grade 5" or accept any HL maths. The honest conclusion is that AA SL or AI HL would protect the application better than a predicted 4 in AA HL, and this student has room to change before predicted grades are set.

Ask the school for its written deadline for changing maths course in the first weeks of DP1, not when a problem appears.

How can I help my child with IB Maths at home, and when is extra support needed?

Parents help most with IB Maths by protecting regular study time, asking their child to explain what they learned, and tracking test results and IA deadlines, not by teaching the maths themselves. Extra support is worth considering when grades fall across two or more tests, homework takes much longer than it should, or the internal assessment stalls.

What works at home.

You do not need to know the mathematics to be useful.

  • Fixed slots. Two or three short maths sessions a week, at the same times, beat one long panic session before a test.
  • "Explain it to me." Ask your child to explain one method from this week's lessons in their own words. If they cannot explain it, they have not yet understood it, and they will notice that themselves.
  • The right calculator, used well. Make sure your child owns the GDC model the school recommends and practises with it at home. In AI every paper uses it; in AA, Paper 1 is calculator-free, so hand practice matters too.
  • Past papers under time. In the final months, a full paper in exam time, marked with the official mark scheme, tells you far more than hours of rereading notes.
  • The IA calendar. The exploration is assessed on five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. Ask to see the school's internal deadlines and check, without reading the maths, that a draft exists on time.

What to avoid.

Do not solve the homework or rewrite the exploration. The IA must be your child's own work, and the IB treats outside help on it seriously.

Warning signs that call for extra support.

  • Test grades drop on the 1 to 7 scale across two or more assessments in a row.
  • Maths homework regularly takes twice as long as other subjects, or ends in tears.
  • Your child says "I understand it in class but not at home" week after week.
  • The IA topic is still undecided a few weeks before the first draft is due.
  • A target degree requires AA HL and the current level sits below the grade that degree asks for.

Is IB Maths AI HL easier than AA HL?

IB Maths AI HL is not easier than AA HL, it is different: less hand algebra and proof, more modelling, statistics and interpretation. Students who dislike long written explanations can find AI HL harder than expected, because many marks reward commenting on what a result means in context.

Do US universities care whether my child takes IB Maths AA or AI?

US universities rarely require IB Maths AA or AI by name; they judge the overall rigour of the programme and the grades. For engineering or maths majors at selective US universities, HL maths, ideally AA HL, is still the strongest signal that a student is ready for university calculus.

Can my child take IB Physics HL with IB Maths AI?

Yes, IB Physics HL can be taken with IB Maths AI, because the IB sets no maths prerequisite for Physics. The student will need to practise algebraic rearrangement and vectors more deliberately, and for a physics or engineering degree the university will usually still ask for Maths AA HL.

What grade in IB Maths do universities usually ask for?
