IB Maths AA HL Calculus: Differentiate and Integrate

29 October 20269 min read

An IB Maths AA HL calculus quick reference: choose differentiation and integration methods, check conditions and avoid exam traps with worked examples.

In brief

  • In IB Maths AA HL calculus, choose a technique by identifying the expression's structure and checking its domain before calculating.
  • Check an antiderivative by differentiating it, and distinguish signed definite integrals from geometric area.
  • For IB Maths AA HL exam questions, show the mathematical setup, preserve exact values when requested and use calculator output to support clear working.

How do you choose the right calculus technique?

In IB Maths AA HL calculus, choose the technique by recognising whether the expression contains a composition, product, quotient or recognisable derivative. Check the domain and the question's requested form before calculating. Differentiation follows structural rules; integration requires recognising a reverse derivative or transforming the expression into one.

Use this guide as a final revision reference: identify the structure, state any restrictions, calculate, then check. A composite expression suggests the chain rule when differentiating, but substitution when integrating only works directly if the differential also matches. Similar-looking expressions can therefore require different integration methods.

The calculus topic also includes limits, continuity, differential equations, kinematics, optimisation, areas, volumes of revolution and numerical methods. The full course map is available at /insights/ib-math-aa-hl-syllabus-complete-guide; this article concentrates on choosing and checking techniques. Keep algebraic rearrangement in your toolkit because simplification often reveals the intended method.

How do you differentiate without missing a factor?

In IB Maths AA HL, differentiate from the outside inward for a composition, and use the product or quotient rule when separate functions are multiplied or divided. Write the rule before simplifying. The most common structural errors are omitting the inner derivative and differentiating a product term by term.

For a composite function, use ddxf(g(x))=f′(g(x))g′(x)\frac{d}{dx}f(g(x))=f'(g(x))g'(x). For products and quotients, use (uv)′=u′v+uv′(uv)'=u'v+uv' and (uv)′=u′v−uv′v2\left(\frac{u}{v}\right)'=\frac{u'v-uv'}{v^2}, with v≠0v\ne0. Trigonometric differentiation formulas assume angles in radians; check the calculator mode when comparing an exact derivative with a numerical value.

Consider y=x2e3xy=x^2e^{3x}. The product rule gives y′=2xe3x+x2(3e3x)=e3x(2x+3x2)y'=2xe^{3x}+x^2(3e^{3x})=e^{3x}(2x+3x^2). For a tangent at x=1x=1, calculate both y=e3y=e^3 and the gradient y′=5e3y'=5e^3, then write y−e3=5e3(x−1)y-e^3=5e^3(x-1).

With implicit differentiation, every differentiated occurrence of the dependent variable needs its chain-rule factor: x2+y2=25x^2+y^2=25 gives 2x+2ydydx=02x+2y\frac{dy}{dx}=0, hence dydx=−xy\frac{dy}{dx}=-\frac{x}{y} where y≠0y\ne0. Stationary points require a sign or second-derivative test for classification; a zero first derivative alone does not establish a maximum.

When should you use substitution or integration by parts?

In IB Maths AA HL integration, use substitution when an inner function's derivative appears as a factor, allowing for a constant multiplier. Use integration by parts when differentiating one factor simplifies the remaining integral. Before either method, check whether expanding, dividing or using a standard antiderivative makes the calculation shorter.

The power rule is ∫xn dx=xn+1n+1+C\int x^n\,dx=\frac{x^{n+1}}{n+1}+C for n≠−1n\ne-1. Its exception is ∫1x dx=ln⁡∣x∣+C\int\frac{1}{x}\,dx=\ln|x|+C on intervals excluding zero. Also remember ∫ekx dx=ekxk+C\int e^{kx}\,dx=\frac{e^{kx}}{k}+C for constant k≠0k\ne0 and ∫cos⁡x dx=sin⁡x+C\int\cos x\,dx=\sin x+C.

For ∫2xcos⁡(x2) dx\int 2x\cos(x^2)\,dx, set u=x2u=x^2 and du=2x dxdu=2x\,dx. The integral becomes ∫cos⁡u du=sin⁡u+C=sin⁡(x2)+C\int\cos u\,du=\sin u+C=\sin(x^2)+C. Differentiating the result produces 2xcos⁡(x2)2x\cos(x^2), confirming both the argument and the multiplier.

For ∫xex dx\int xe^x\,dx, choose u=xu=x and dv=ex dxdv=e^x\,dx, so du=dxdu=dx and v=exv=e^x. Then ∫u dv=uv−∫v du\int u\,dv=uv-\int v\,du gives xex−ex+Cxe^x-e^x+C. For rational functions, try partial fractions after polynomial division if needed: 1x2−1=12(x−1)−12(x+1)\frac{1}{x^2-1}=\frac{1}{2(x-1)}-\frac{1}{2(x+1)}, so the integral is 12ln⁡∣x−1∣−12ln⁡∣x+1∣+C\frac12\ln|x-1|-\frac12\ln|x+1|+C on intervals avoiding x=±1x=\pm1.

How do you handle bounds, areas and differential equations?

In IB Maths AA HL, evaluate a definite integral using an antiderivative only after checking that the integrand is continuous across the integration interval. Split geometric areas where the function changes sign. For separable differential equations, separate the variables, integrate both sides and use the initial condition to determine the constant.

If F′=fF'=f and ff is continuous on [a,b][a,b], then ∫abf(x) dx=F(b)−F(a)\int_a^b f(x)\,dx=F(b)-F(a). Substitution also changes bounds: with u=x2u=x^2, ∫012xex2 dx=∫01eu du=e−1\int_0^1 2xe^{x^2}\,dx=\int_0^1 e^u\,du=e-1. Here the numerical bounds happen to stay the same, but their variable has changed.

For f(x)=x−1f(x)=x-1 on [0,2][0,2], the signed integral is zero. The geometric area is −∫01(x−1) dx+∫12(x−1) dx=1-\int_0^1(x-1)\,dx+\int_1^2(x-1)\,dx=1. Similarly, displacement is ∫abv(t) dt\int_a^b v(t)\,dt, while distance is ∫ab∣v(t)∣ dt\int_a^b|v(t)|\,dt; split at changes of velocity sign.

For dydx=2xy\frac{dy}{dx}=2xy with y(0)=3y(0)=3, separation gives 1y dy=2x dx\frac{1}{y}\,dy=2x\,dx, then ln⁡∣y∣=x2+C\ln|y|=x^2+C and y=3ex2y=3e^{x^2}. Check the derivative and initial condition; division by the dependent variable can discard constant solutions. For rotation about the horizontal axis, the disk formula is V=π∫ab[y(x)]2 dxV=\pi\int_a^b[y(x)]^2\,dx when the region extends from the axis to the curve.

What should you show in an AA HL exam answer?

In IB Maths AA HL exam answers, show the chosen rule, substitution or integral setup before presenting the result. Follow the command word and give the requested accuracy or exact form. Clear working makes your reasoning assessable and can earn method marks when a later arithmetic error prevents the correct final answer.

Paper 1 does not allow technology; Papers 2 and 3 require a graphic display calculator. In calculator questions, record the equation solved or the definite integral evaluated, including bounds. A graph helps check roots, signs and turning points, but a plotted curve alone does not establish an exact algebraic result.

For “show that”, provide a valid chain of reasoning to the supplied result. For “hence”, use the preceding result as directed; for “hence or otherwise”, another valid method is permitted. Mark schemes commonly distinguish method marks, labelled M, and accuracy marks, labelled A; the precise allocation depends on the question.

For revision, take one differentiation question, one integration question and one application, then explain each method choice before calculating. Redo any failed choice without notes and check against the mark scheme. How can parents tell whether calculus is under control?

Parents can assess IB Maths AA HL calculus readiness by asking their child to explain a method choice, solve a fresh question and check the result without prompting. Reliable understanding includes recognising when a technique applies. A correct answer copied from a familiar example provides much less evidence of independent control.

Ask for a short explanation of why substitution works or why an area needs splitting, then let your child finish independently. Support regular, manageable practice and keep an error log focused on decisions. If the same method-selection problem persists across unfamiliar questions, targeted teaching can address that specific gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether substitution will work?▾

Substitution works directly when the chosen new variable and its differential allow you to rewrite the entire integral in that variable. For u=g(x)u=g(x), calculate du=g′(x) dxdu=g'(x)\,dx explicitly. A constant multiplier is manageable; an unexplained leftover factor means the substitution is incomplete.

Do I always need the integration constant?▾

Include an arbitrary constant in an indefinite integral; a definite integral evaluates to a value and has no arbitrary constant in its final answer. For a differential equation, use any supplied initial condition to determine the constant rather than leaving a family of solutions.

Is a definite integral always an area?▾

A definite integral gives signed accumulation, so it equals geometric area only when the relevant integrand is nonnegative throughout the interval. For an area between curves, identify the upper and lower functions and split the interval wherever their order changes.

Can I use the GDC instead of showing calculus working?▾

In IB Maths AA HL calculator papers, a GDC can evaluate permitted numerical results, but your written answer must still communicate the mathematical setup and satisfy the command word. Record bounds, equations and relevant values; a decimal approximation does not meet a request for an exact answer.
