History and Overview

The American School of Milan (ASM) was founded in 1962 and is the longest-established American international school in Italy. Located on a 13-acre campus in Noverasco di Opera, just south of Milan, ASM serves around 700 students from over 50 nationalities. Authorised as an IB World School since 1983, ASM combines a full American college-prep curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, plus Cambridge IGCSE qualifications and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) and is a member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS). Its long history, large purpose-built campus and athletic facilities make it a reference point among international schools serving Milanese expat and Italian families.

IGCSE, IB Diploma and AP

ASM's upper school offers students three internationally recognised qualifications. In Grade 10 (~Year 11 in the British system) students sit Cambridge IGCSE examinations in core subjects including Mathematics (CIE 0580), Additional Mathematics (CIE 0606), Physics (CIE 0625), Chemistry, Biology, English and a foreign language. In Grades 11–12, students can choose between the IB Diploma Programme — selecting six subjects across the IB groups plus Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS — or a college-prep AP track that combines an American high-school diploma with Advanced Placement courses. Many ASM students opt for the IB Diploma route, choosing IB Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, HL/SL) and IB Physics, Chemistry or Biology at HL or SL. The combination of an IGCSE foundation in Grade 10 followed by the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12 is one of the most rigorous routes available at ASM and one I work with frequently.

Campus and Community

ASM occupies a purpose-built campus in Noverasco di Opera, around 12 km south of central Milan. The site includes science laboratories, a performing arts centre, library, sports fields, gymnasium, swimming pool and dining hall. The school runs a comprehensive bus service connecting central Milan, Linate, Segrate, San Donato and surrounding municipalities — most students rely on it. The community is genuinely international: a large American expat base alongside Italian families, plus students from European, Latin American, Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds. Class sizes typically run in the high teens to low twenties, with strong pastoral support and a long tradition of guidance counselling for university applications worldwide.

Why Choose This School

ASM is the natural choice for families who want a full American college-prep experience while keeping the option of a globally portable IB Diploma or Cambridge IGCSE qualification. Six decades of operation in Milan, an IB Diploma authorisation since 1983 and the largest dedicated international-school campus in the Milan area give the school a level of resource and stability that few competitors match. For students aiming at competitive US universities, ASM's combination of AP courses, college counselling and athletics is particularly strong. For students aiming at UK or European universities, the IB Diploma pathway delivers the academic rigour and international recognition required.

I work with ASM students preparing for IGCSE Maths/Physics in Grade 10 and for the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12 — IB Math AA/AI, IB Physics, IB Chemistry. Contact me for a free assessment session.
