Independent vs mutually exclusive events: Venn diagram exam question
x = 0.21 and P(A′ | B′) = 0.21/0.3 = 0.7.
The question
Let and be two independent events such that
and .
(a) Given that , find the value of . (4 marks)
(b) Find . (2 marks)
The solution
- 01Draw two overlapping circles inside a box. The given is without , the given is without , and the overlap is .
- 02Read the two events off the diagram: and .
- 03Independent means the probabilities multiply, so . Do not confuse this with mutually exclusive, which would be two circles that do not touch. If you set , the question contradicts itself, because .
- 04Multiply out to get , then bring everything to one side: . The four marks are for reaching this line.
- 05The discriminant is , so there is one repeated root and no second answer to discard. Hence .
- 06Check: and , and , so the result is consistent.
- 07For part (b), use . Inside the circles the total is , so outside both is , and . This gives .
- 08Shortcut for part (b): if and are independent, so are their complements, so . A conditional probability equal to the plain one is independence showing itself, and it is worth stating in the answer.
Answer
