IB Physics Formula Sheet
Built by Pietro Meloni, PhD Candidate in Physics · 10+ Years Teaching IGCSE
IB DP · 13 formulas · 4 sections
All the key equations for IB Physics at Standard and Higher Level. The IB data booklet provides these in the exam, but understanding the physics behind each equation is what earns the marks.
Each formula includes practical exam tips and common pitfalls to avoid.
Mechanics
SUVAT equations
…One of the four SUVAT equations for constant acceleration. Choose the equation that connects the three known quantities.
Newton's second law
…Net force equals mass times acceleration. In IB, always work with net (resultant) force.
Work done
…Force times displacement times the cosine of the angle between them. When θ = 0, it simplifies to W = Fs.
Kinetic energy
…Derivable from the work-energy theorem. Frequently combined with GPE in conservation problems.
Gravitational PE
…Change in potential energy near Earth's surface. For orbital mechanics, use E = −GMm/r.
Waves
Wave speed
…Universal wave equation. Speed depends on the medium, not on frequency.
Intensity
…Power per unit area, measured in W/m². Intensity follows the inverse square law for point sources.
Snell's law
…Relates angles of incidence and refraction. When light goes from dense to less dense medium, total internal reflection can occur.
Electricity & Magnetism
Ohm's law
…Only valid for ohmic conductors at constant temperature. Use V-I graphs to identify non-ohmic behaviour.
Power
…Three equivalent forms. Choose based on which quantities you know.
EMF
…Total EMF equals current times total resistance (external R plus internal resistance r).
Thermal Physics
Specific heat
…Energy required to change temperature. c is the specific heat capacity, unique to each substance.
Ideal gas law
…Pressure × volume = moles × gas constant × temperature (in kelvin). R = 8.31 J/(mol·K).
