How progress gets measured

Most tutoring reports the same thing back to a family: the student is doing better. I came here from research, where better is not a finding until you can say better than what, measured how. That is the discipline the whole method is built around.

A baseline before anything else

The first session is an assessment: the student works through questions from a real official past paper while I watch how they think. That gives a starting point on the same scale the exam uses, so everything claimed later has something to be measured against.

Errors mapped to the mark scheme

Not "weak in mechanics", but which command term is costing marks, whether the method mark was earned and the accuracy mark lost, where the working stops being visible to an examiner. That level of detail is what decides what we do in the next lesson.

A written record after every lesson

A lesson report goes into the parents area after each session: what we covered, what went wrong, what to practise before the next one. It is dated and it accumulates, so nobody has to take my word for how things are going.

Timed mocks, and the trend

Full papers under exam conditions, marked to the official scheme. A single mock is a snapshot and can be a bad day. A series of them is a trend, and the trend is the thing worth acting on.

Non esercizi inventati per un libro di testo: le domande vere che gli studenti si troveranno davanti. Ho ritagliato una per una tutte le domande dei paper ufficiali IB e Cambridge IGCSE, le ho ordinate per argomento e ho abbinato a ciascuna il suo mark scheme. Così dopo una lezione sul moto del proiettile si esercita sulle domande d’esame vere su quel moto, corrette come le corregge l’esaminatore.

Taught by a research physicist

The other half of the argument has nothing to do with method. A student who is genuinely good will, sooner or later, run past their tutor. That is exactly the point where the questions get interesting and the answers start getting vague.

HL and past it. The "but why does that actually work" questions get a real answer, not a "you do not need that for the exam".
Internal Assessment and Extended Essay in Physics, supervised by someone who has run experiments, written up results and had them reviewed.
STEM university admissions: the maths and physics that selective courses and entrance tests expect sits above the syllabus, not inside it.
